Pictures show blaze seen across London that forced 100 people to evacuate
Briefly

A substantial fire broke out at an electrical substation in Aberdeen Place, Maida Vale, around 5:30 am on April 29, 2025. Approximately 100 residents were evacuated while over 100 firefighters worked with 15 fire engines to combat the flames, which affected nearby residential buildings. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to significant smoke visible in London. A major incident was declared but stood down later in the morning, although firefighting efforts continued due to the complexity of the situation.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: "Due to the fire involving a high-profile piece of infrastructure that was affecting nearby residential buildings, a major incident was declared by London Fire Brigade at 0826."
I am pleased to report that this declaration was stood down at 1053. "However, firefighting operations will continue for some time on the transformer at the substation."
A huge amount of smoke was visible across London with over 170 calls being made by concerned Londoners.
To combat this technically complex fire, crews have been deploying foam to suppress the flames.
