Resident sustains life changing injury after road traffic collision in North Cork - Greater safety measures required to save lives
A resident of Aghacross, Kildorrery sustained life-changing injuries in a road traffic collision after returning from work with the Cahir Traffic Corps. Concerns were raised at a Fermoy Municipal District meeting by residents from Scart, Kildorrery, focusing on speed and the risk of future collisions. John Finn described long-term residence and said the road improvement is offset by excessive speed when leaving the village. He reported that his wife was rear-ended at high speed, driven 400 meters, and suffered three cracked vertebrae, limiting her ability to work. Louise Welsh outlined key issues including residents merging onto a double lane, the Aghacross turn-off, and requests for a ghost island, right-turn access, improved signage, and traffic calming for footpaths.
"“The new road has been an improvement from a certain point of view, but there is an issue about speed coming out of the village. It is like a runway with people leaving the village and taking off.”"
"“My wife Eileen was coming home one Thursday afternoon at 2pm,” stated Mr Finn. “She indicated all the way up. She got to the turnoff for Aghacross, she had to stop for a car, and she was rear-ended by someone doing 122kmh. She was driven 400m up the road. The car was bent into a banana.”"
"“She has life-changing injuries. She should be doing a 12-hour shift as a guard. She can only do six as she can't sit down for that long. She has three cracked vertebrae in her back. She was lucky to come out of it,” he added."
"Louise Welsh who also addressed the councillors said there are three main issues that the residents of Kildorrery wish to highlight. “The three issues are the residents coming out on to the double lane, Aghacross turn-off and there should be a ghost island, a right turn for Aghacross residents. We are looking for better signage and traffic calming measures for the footpaths.”"
