Commander Julian Bennett of the Metropolitan Police has been dismissed for a second time after refusing to take a drugs test. Initially sacked in October 2023 for gross misconduct following the refusal, his previous dismissal was overturned by the Police Appeals Tribunal. However, a subsequent misconduct hearing upheld the original misconduct finding, leading to his dismissal again. Despite the dismissal, Bennett retains his pension due to his age. The case has incurred over £1.5 million in costs to taxpayers, showcasing a prolonged disciplinary process.
I am enormously concerned that almost five years since this incident happened we have only now been able to dismiss Commander Bennett. This should have been a simple matter.
The allegation proven against Bennett was again found at the level of gross misconduct by the latest panel on Tuesday.
