Thames Water asked millions of customers to reduce water use after soaring temperatures exposed strains in Britain’s aging utility infrastructure. The company avoided a formal hosepipe ban and instead urged households to put away sprinklers, avoid hoses, and recycle paddling pool water. Customers used an additional 387 million litres in a single day, reflecting pressure on a network struggling to restore public confidence. Record-breaking temperatures last Monday reached 35C in parts of London, driving demand for garden watering and paddling pools. Thames Water issued behavior-change requests, including using watering cans, allowing lawns to brown, reusing water, and keeping bowls of water in sinks for plants. The company warned that hot weather causes “rapid spikes in water use,” especially from outdoor activities.
"The appeal came after customers consumed an additional 387 million litres of water in a single day, a dramatic increase that exposed the pressure on a network already struggling to restore public confidence."
