Alt Carbon is a climate-tech startup founded by siblings Shrey and Sparsh Agarwal. They transformed their struggling family tea estate in Darjeeling into a pioneer of carbon dioxide removal through enhanced rock weathering. Initially aimed at rescuing their family business from bankruptcy, their vision expanded to include climate action using basalt rock dust to sequester carbon. With recent funding of $12 million, the startup plans to scale their impact from 500 acres to 500,000 hectares, aiming to remove 5 million tons of carbon by 2030.
Within carbon markets, our realization was that a lot of the projects in India, which are more avoidance-based, are of very low quality, and they produce junk credits.
Alt Carbon aims to expand to 500,000 hectares of land and by 2030, to remove 5 million tons of carbon from the region.
The journey began with a bittersweet homecoming for the Agarwals, which ultimately transformed their family's struggling tea estate into a climate venture.
Enhanced rock weathering could revolutionize Darjeeling's legacy, shifting it from climate vulnerability to becoming a leader in climate action.
