John Yuyi, a Taiwanese visual artist, has spent three years living a nomadic life, traveling between cities like Zurich and Berlin after storing her possessions in New York. This unconventional lifestyle has fostered her artistic expression, notably in her latest project, POV, which diverges from her usual staged work. Instead, it captures candid self-portraits taken in various friends' homes during her travels. Through her art, Yuyi examines themes of female identity, performance, and beauty standards, creating a unique commentary on the transient nature of her existence and modern femininity.
I stopped paying rent in July of 2022. At the beginning, I was thinking, 'I'm just taking a short break.' After the Zurich exhibition, I was inspired by new cities.
Her latest project, POV, is quite different from the hyper-staged productions she is best known for. It documents her nomadic life through self-portraits.
