Resting Reef, a British startup, has created an innovative approach to memorialization by turning cremated ashes into artificial reefs. In June 2024, they submerged 24 sculptures off Bali's coast, now home to 46 new marine species and enhancing fish biodiversity. The project, funded by UK government grants, pioneers a unique blend of art and ecology. While the current pilot incorporates pet ashes, future plans include human ashes. Resting Reef aims to establish worldwide marine memorial sites, marking a significant shift in death care practices and environmental conservation efforts.
In the future, we'll have memorial sites-marine sites-opening around the world.
The site boasts four times the fish biodiversity of the nearest comparable location.
