"SMRs are atomic reactors with up to one-third of the generating capacity of conventional nuclear power plants, with a modular design so they can be largely factory-assembled before being transported to the relevant site for installation."
"The contract requires Rolls-Royce SMR to work with GBE-N to meet key milestones as it commences site-specific design, regulatory engagement, and planning processes, ahead of a future Final Investment Decision."
"Wylfa was chosen because it is already the site of a former Magnox nuclear power station that has been inactive since 2015. It was acquired by GBE-N from engineering firm Hitachi early in 2024 for £160 million ($210 million)."
The British government has signed a contract with Rolls-Royce for the design of small modular reactors (SMRs) through Great British Energy - Nuclear. The contract initiates technology design activities for the country's first SMRs, which are expected to be operational in the next decade. SMRs have a generating capacity of up to one-third of conventional plants and are designed for factory assembly. Rolls-Royce was selected as the preferred provider, with funding allocated for project delivery. The contract allows immediate work on three initial SMRs at Wylfa, a site with a history of nuclear power generation.
