"Evidence of the rat infestation was uncovered in at least 20 of the mall's 27 food establishments, a health official said Monday. Nine restaurants that failed to move quickly to attack the problem have been referred to the Los Angeles city attorney's office for possible criminal prosecution, said Carl B. Charles, an environmental health manager for the county Department of Health Services."
"It's serious enough that we want to nip it in the bud. If we don't knock it out, they could just take the place over, and we don't want that. To halt the invasion, the mall's owner, La Cienega Associates, stepped in last week and signed a contract with a major institutional exterminating company."
"The exterminator, Bugs Burger Bug Killers of Miami, plans an extensive program of trapping and baiting throughout the structure, which covers more than eight acres. They tell us that after two to four weeks, they will be eliminated. After that, it's really a matter of routine maintenance to make sure they don't come back."
The Beverly Center, a $100-million upscale shopping mall in Los Angeles, faced a significant rat infestation discovered by county health inspectors over two months. Evidence of rats was found in at least 20 of the 27 food establishments within the 900,000-square-foot structure. Nine restaurants failed to address the problem promptly and were referred to the city attorney's office for possible criminal prosecution. The infestation likely resulted from rats displaced by nearby construction projects. Mall management signed an emergency contract with Bugs Burger Bug Killers to conduct extensive trapping and baiting throughout the facility. Health officials emphasized the urgency of eliminating the infestation to prevent the rats from taking over the premises.
