Chicago and Chiclayo celebrate election of Pope Leo XIV
Briefly

Robert Prevost has been elected as pope, adopting the name Leo XIV, and has connections to both Chicago and Chiclayo, Peru. Celebrations erupted in both cities, reflecting the joy of a dual citizen stepping into the papacy. Prevost, 69, was recognized for his compassionate leadership during his tenure as chiclayo's bishop, and students in Chicago expressed pride and excitement over their hometown connection to the new pope. Additionally, in his inaugural address from St. Peter's Basilica, he acknowledged his links to Peru in Spanish, fostering a sense of inclusiveness for both nations.
Our students are just beside themselves. They're beyond excited and can't believe a Chicagoan is their new pope. They were in awe.
Even when he was 12 and 13, it was apparent to all of us that he knew what his calling was.
Pope Leo XIV may be the first American-born leader of the Catholic Church, but Peru, which gave him citizenship in 2015, also claims him as its own.
Greetings...to all of you, and in particular, to my beloved diocese of Chiclayo.
