"It's so cool. I think it's a bucket list thing for me. I've tried to be on this team a few different times, and it hadn't worked out for numerous reasons, but now that I finally get to do it and represent USA and get to play baseball, it's an amazing thing. You know, we were all watching the Winter Olympics to see the hockey teams win, and just to kind of see the nation support them and be behind them, it was amazing, and we love that."
Clayton Kershaw made his debut for Team USA in an exhibition game against the Colorado Rockies, pitching 0.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on a hit and a walk. He entered in the fourth inning and gave up a 414-foot solo home run to Mickey Moniak before recording two outs and walking another batter who later scored. Despite Kershaw's rough outing, Team USA won decisively 14-4. The retired Dodgers pitcher declared his intention to play in the World Baseball Classic after retiring from MLB, viewing it as a bucket-list opportunity to represent his country. He will likely serve in a bullpen role for Team USA.
