Dodgers Sign Recently-Released Veteran Pitcher
"The Los Angeles Dodgers are signing left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney to a minor league deal, per MLB insider Jon Heyman. This will be Heaney's third stint with the organization. The lowest mark of Heaney's career came in 2022 with the Dodgers, when he had a 3.10 ERA across 72.2 innings before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. As he returns to the LA organization, the southpaw will start with Triple-A Oklahoma City and is now postseason-eligible."
"Heaney was recently released by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The left-hander was designated for assignment on Aug. 26. He then cleared waivers and was released by the team. Heaney was 5-10 this season with a 5.39 ERA, 84 strikeouts and 1.363 WHIP across 120.1 innings pitched. The Pirates kept the left-hander at the July 31 trade deadline despite his expiring contract, but ultimately chose to release the struggling left-hander by the end of the summer."
"In 12 MLB seasons, the left-hander has a career 4.55 ERA and 1,154 strikeouts across 1,134.2 innings pitched. The Dodgers choosing to sign Heaney ahead of the deadline seemingly indicates the team believes the veteran can help them for the stretch run amid a tight division race. LA is currently two games ahead of the San Diego Padres in the NL West, but will need to extend their lead in the final month of the regular season."
