The curfew, effective from Tuesday evening to early Wednesday morning, affects a designated area in downtown LA, a response to escalating unlawful behavior that has led to multiple businesses being looted. Mayor Bass described the situation as having reached a tipping point. Meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom criticized Trump for what he deems an unprecedented military presence in the city, raising concerns about democracy and diverse enforcement actions currently taking place.
"We reached a tipping point" after 23 businesses were looted, Bass said. The curfew will be in place in an area covering a just over 2.5 square kilometre section of downtown."
"The curfew is a necessary measure to protect lives and safeguard property following several consecutive days of growing unrest throughout the city," said McDonnell.
