Mountain lion snags Declan the shih tzu 'feet away' from home's front door, Glendale woman says
"My shih tzu was a bright light and just fun and funny and had a great personality and everyone loved and adored him. Losing a dog is always hard, but when it's such a sweet soul like he was, it's especially hard."
"It was so strong. I'm pulling his leash and screaming and trying to do everything you're told to do. In the heat of the moment, McVay said she wasn't sure if she let go or if the mountain lion ripped Declan out of the leash, but the cat pulled away its prey and scurried back into the nearby foothills."
"The pair were walking back home when McVay said she felt a pull and a 'whoosh' from behind. The cat's jaws were around Declan. McVay initially attempted to yell and make herself bigger to startle away the predator. Those efforts weren't enough, however."
A Glendale nurse practitioner named Laura McVay experienced a harrowing attack when a mountain lion snatched her 5½-year-old shih tzu named Declan during an evening walk around 11:30 p.m. Monday. The attack occurred mere feet from her home as she was returning inside after the dog's final restroom break. McVay attempted standard predator deterrence tactics, including yelling and making herself appear larger, but the cougar proved too strong. Despite her efforts to hold the leash, the mountain lion dragged Declan away into nearby foothills. McVay initially remained focused on the immediate situation without fear for her own safety, though she later reflected this may have been unwise. Following the traumatic incident, she filed an attack report with authorities.
