Pacific Coast Highway to reopen near Malibu after January wildfires
Briefly

The Pacific Coast Highway, a popular route in Southern California, will reopen today for Memorial Day weekend after being closed since the devastating Palisades Fire earlier this year. This 11-mile stretch from Santa Monica to Malibu sees heavy summer traffic. The fire caused extensive damage, claiming 12 lives and destroying nearly 7,000 structures. Since then, access has been limited to residents and construction vehicles as cleanup continues. The upcoming holiday weekend prompted the reopening, allowing tourists to return to this iconic coastal highway.
Traffic on the roughly 11-mile beach-hugging stretch from Santa Monica through Malibu, which averages more than 40,000 vehicles daily during the summer travel season, has been restricted to residents and construction vehicles since the blaze.
The Palisades Fire, burning in the Santa Monica Mountains, has burned an estimated 5,300 structures.
