A rapidly spreading brush fire ignited north of Los Angeles, prompting thousands of evacuations. Known as the Canyon fire, it grew to over 2.3 square miles within five hours and remained 0% contained. The fire is located near Lake Piru in the Los Padres National Forest and has put around 4,200 residents and 1,400 structures under evacuation orders. Hot, dry weather and rugged terrain contributed to the rapid spread. Firefighters and air support are actively working to control the blaze, while a larger fire, the Gifford fire, has also threatened homes in the region.
The Canyon fire ignited around 1.30pm, growing to over 2.3 sq miles (6 sq km) in five hours, according to Ventura county emergency response.
In Los Angeles county, around 4,200 residents and 1,400 structures are under an evacuation order, and another 12,500 residents are under an evacuation warning.
Extreme heat and low humidity in our north county have created dangerous conditions where flames can spread with alarming speed, Barger said in a statement.
The Gifford fire had spread to 154 sq miles (399 sq km) by Thursday afternoon and was at 15% containment, threatening hundreds of homes.
