Martha Gutierrez DeRomero, 57, was traveling to a swap meet with $60,000 in fitness merchandise when she claimed she was carjacked by two masked men. However, after investigations, authorities uncovered that the incident was a hoax intended for insurance fraud. DeRomero and her boyfriend were charged with felony insurance fraud and misdemeanor filing a false report. The Madera County Sheriff highlighted the seriousness of exploiting emergency services for personal gain, emphasizing that such actions divert valuable resources from genuine cases. The two are set for arraignment hearings in July.
"What began as a serious and concerning report of a violent carjacking quickly unraveled under careful investigation," Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue said in a statement.
"Attempting to exploit emergency services for personal gain is not only illegal, it diverts resources from those who truly need help," Pogue added.
