The election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, has generated excitement and joy among local church leaders. Rev. Thomas Martin and others expressed gratitude for the new shepherd, while the selection surprised many as Pope Leo XIV, Robert Prevost, has a significant background in Latin America, bridging cultural divides. With a shift in congregational demographics, the new papacy reflects the global nature of the Catholic Church. Special masses are anticipated to celebrate his inauguration, signaling a hopeful future for the Catholic community.
"It's great joy that we have a new pope, gratitude that the Holy Spirit has brought us a new shepherd to guide the church," said Rev. Thomas Martin.
"Myself, I'm excited, I'm ecstatic, almost in tears that we finally have a pope," Go said.
"It's really the Catholic moment," he said.
"Some cardinals were looking outside of the West, and I think he kind of fits that bill. Although he's an American, he spent most of his time in ministry in Latin America," Martin said.
