Guadalajara is undergoing major upgrades, including a newly paved highway from the city airport to downtown and a $4 million renovation of the famous roundabout, as the city prepares to host four World Cup matches in June. The expected influx of millions of fans contrasts with the reality that hundreds of bodies have been found in clandestine graves dug by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Remains have been discovered along the main route to Akron Stadium, where games will be played. Victims include a 17-year-old student who disappeared after going to sell a motorcycle and a 34-year-old father who vanished after going shopping. State statistics report 1,907 bodies found in Guadalajara and nearby cities between 2018 and March of the current year. A government campaign promoting Zapopan as the heart of soccer has been met with families’ sarcastic responses referencing clandestine graves, with dozens of graves and hundreds of remains found since January 2025, including several near Akron Stadium and La Minerva.
"Families searching for their loved ones sarcastically responded with, Zapopan, the heart of clandestine graves. Since January of 2025 alone, search groups and authorities have discovered 58 graves with 226 sets of remains inside city limits. Five of the graves were located within three miles of Akron Stadium. Three graves with 15 bodies were found within a mile of the city's iconic La Minerva roundabout."
