Jorge Penadés, influenced by his upbringing in Málaga, Spain, creatively repurposes uprooted olive tree roots into unique furniture. These roots, often over 100 years old, are processed into various designs like chairs and shelves. Penadés embraces the unpredictability of these materials, opting for olive oil finishes rather than varnish to maintain their natural properties. His innovative approach extends beyond the Uprooted series, as seen in custom environments he designs for brands like Camper, and he draws inspiration from unconventional materials like kinesiology tape.
Olive oil is part of our DNA. You see it in the food, the culture, the landscape. Many native trees are being uprooted to accommodate contemporary harvesting equipment, leading to sacrificed plants and root systems being sold as firewood.
Technically and aesthetically, the dense hunks of roots that Penadés processes have really nice properties, many being over 100 years old. This unusual timber is repurposed into furnishings such as chairs and shelves.
Penadés embraces the unpredictability of his specimens, opting to finish them in olive oil instead of varnish, allowing the wood to expand or contract over time. This acceptance of uncertainty is central to his approach.
His methodical style spans his entire practice, including crafting custom environments for the Spanish footwear brand Camper and drawing inspiration from everyday materials like kinesiology tape and toilet-paper rolls.
