US ambassador to Spain complains PM Pedro Sanchez has not received him once yet
The U.S. ambassador to Spain said he has not met Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez more than three months after taking office and claimed Spain has not taken steps to invite President Trump. He said Trump is frustrated that NATO countries pledged to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, while Spain is the only government refusing to fulfill that commitment. He declined to speculate about any U.S. troop withdrawal, stating only President Trump can decide. He attributed deterioration in bilateral relations to Sanchez’s refusal to increase military spending to 5% of GDP and to Spain’s refusal to allow use of bases and airspace for U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran. He emphasized the importance of Spain as a NATO ally and highlighted the Rota and Moron bases as central to collective defense.
