Will Smith has established himself as one of baseball's top catchers through multiple All-Star selections and contributions to two World Series teams. He blends above-average defensive ability with strong bat-to-ball offensive skills, producing one of the most well-rounded profiles at the catcher position. Smith won a silver medal with Team USA in 2023 and expressed a desire to return for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Smith noted the importance of quickly building rapport with teammates in short international tournaments. With JT Realmuto aging toward 35 by 2026 and Smith in his prime, Smith is positioned to pursue a starting role.
Los Angeles Dodgers star Will Smith has firmly established himself as one of the best catchers in baseball. The former first round pick out of Louisville has made three-straight All-Star appearances. Smith has been a core member on two World Series teams. He's proven to be an above-average defensive catcher, an excellent offensive catcher in terms of bat-to-ball skills, and ultimately one of the most well-rounded players at his position in the sport.
There's even a case to be made that Smith has already entrenched himself on the Dodgers' all-time Mount Rushmore for catchers (with Mike Piazza, Roy Campanella, and Mike Scioscia). When speaking with Dodgers Nation's Doug McKain, Smith made it clear that he'd love to represent Team USA again for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Smith was a member of the silver medal-winning team in 2023. The squad ultimately lost the gold medal to Shohei Ohtani and Team Japan.
"Oh yeah I would love to. I had such a fun time last time competing," Smith said. "So I would love to do it again." McKain then asked Smith about how competing in these pressure-packed situations (World Baseball Classic, the All-Star Game) differ from normal games played during the season. "You got to get to know your teammates really fast," Smith said. "More so in the WBC."
