Edgardo Henriquez missed the start of the season with a left-foot metatarsal injury and declined to disclose how the injury occurred. He was called up by the Dodgers in midseason and has been summoned multiple times because of bullpen injuries to teammates including Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, Michael Kopech and Brock Stewart, though Scott and Yates are expected to return soon. Henriquez has thrown eight scoreless innings with exceptional velocity: 28 of 92 pitches exceeded 101 mph and he recorded the hardest pitch by a Dodger since Statcast began in 2015. He provides fresh bullpen depth.
Neither the Dodgers or Henriquez would reveal how the 23-year-old sustained the injury after he arrived to Camelback Ranch with a walking boot on early in spring camp. Now, months later, Henriquez is still not inclined to share how he was injured. "I'd rather keep that to myself," Henriquez said to the Los Angeles Times. The right-hander was called up by the Dodgers a month ago, and Henriquez got to make his season debut against the Minnesota Twins.
Nevertheless, injuries opened the door for Henriquez and he's certainly taken advantage of the opportunity. The right-hander has tossed eight scoreless innings for the Dodgers this season, and his velocity thus far has been simply jaw-dropping. A whopping 28 of the 92 pitches he's thrown this season have exceeded 101 miles per hour. Last weekend against San Diego Padres infielder Ryan O'Hearn, Henriquez threw the hardest-thrown pitch by a Dodger since Statcast began tracking speed in 2015.
