Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini sentenced to life in prison for murder of father-in-law
"He is a monster who knows no moral boundaries and has zero reservations about taking the lives of others to benefit himself. This statement was made by Adrienne Spohr, daughter of the victims, during the sentencing hearing, expressing the profound impact of Serafini's crimes on the family."
"During his ruling, Placer County Superior Court Judge Garen J. Horst said Serafini, 52, was a liar, manipulator, arrogant and someone who has a loose relationship with the truth, characterizing the defendant's fundamental character flaws that contributed to the heinous crimes."
"Serafini broke into the Spohr's home while the couple was boating with their grandsons and daughter Erin Spohr - Serafini's wife and sister of Adrienne Spohr. He waited in a closet until his family left and shot them both in the head upon their return, according to prosecutors."
Dan Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for six teams over a 22-year career, was sentenced to life without parole for the first-degree murder of Gary Spohr, 70, and attempted murder of Wendy Wood during a home burglary in Lake Tahoe in 2021. Serafini broke into the Spohr home while the family was boating, hid in a closet, and shot both victims in the head upon their return. He was convicted in July after a six-week trial following two unsuccessful appeals. The jury found him guilty of first-degree burglary and special circumstance allegations including lying-in-wait and felony murder. Wood survived initially but died by suicide in 2022 after struggling with disability and depression. A nanny employed by Serafini pleaded guilty to being an accessory.
