David, 43, restarted collecting sports cards in 2020 and his 12-year-old son Jax joined the hobby. They open packs, watch player highlight videos, and share stories about players like Ken Griffey Jr. The pair purchased an old card collection and found valuable inserts, selling a 1999 Will Clark Star Rubies (#50/50) for $2,000. A Griffey Star Rubies card graded 8 previously sold for $16,100. Collector interest in 1999 Skybox Star Rubies has surged, and online marketplaces like eBay can produce surprisingly high returns for single cards.
"He'll go and watch videos of these players," David says, "like 'Best Plays of Ken Griffey Jr. Ever.' Just introducing him to those old players from my childhood is more important than finding a Griffey Star Rubies. It's him getting to know the players that I used to know and love."
"That \"Griffey Star Rubies\" is an insert card from the 1999 Skybox Premium set. There has been a recent surge in collector interest in that particular subset. An April headline read 'The Forgotten Gem: Why Skybox Star Rubies Deserve More Respect in the Hobby.' Someone outside the hobby might think that these cards are pretty respected already. The first time David and Jax purchased someone's old card collection, they literally found valuable jewels. David sold a 1999 Will Clark Star Rubies card, numbered 50/50, for $2,000 last month."
"If you need a sense of how heated the market for these cards is, consider that an eBay listing that began 'calling all Will Clark fans!' led to a man receiving $2,000 in return for one baseball card. This is not necessarily more magical than getting your 12-year-old into Ken Griffey Jr., but it seems up there with taking your kid to Disney World."
