Otto Lopez becomes latest chapter in Miami Marlins Gold Glove injustice at shortstop
"Rawlings put out their finalist list for the NL Wednesday afternoon, and while it featured three Marlins, none of them received the nod for their work at shortstop. In other words, no love for Otto Lopez, despite having a pretty stellar defensive season in his own right."
"Edgar Renteria. Jose Reyes. Adeiny Hechavarria. Miguel Rojas. Oh, and some guy named Alex Gonzalez- easily the most egregious oversight on this list. All above average defenders, all always in the conversation. Renteria, at least, would go on to win a couple with the Cardinals- though that 2002 award likely came at the expense of Gonzalez. Lopez' great glove work fits right in with this group of overlooked Web Gem generators."
The Miami Marlins franchise has never produced a Gold Glove winner at shortstop, and the streak continued in 2025 when Otto Lopez was not named a finalist. Lopez posted elite defensive marks, ranking near the top in Outs Above Average and Defensive Runs Saved while also playing above-average defense at second base early in the season. Three Marlins were finalists for NL Gold Gloves, but none were recognized at shortstop. Past Marlins shortstops such as Edgar Renteria, Jose Reyes, Adeiny Hechavarria, Miguel Rojas, and Alex Gonzalez have been strong defenders who were often overlooked. Hope remains for a Marlins shortstop breakthrough in 2026.
