In Cleveland, the Detroit Tigers led 2-0 into the bottom of the sixth before a sequence of defensive mistakes and pitching miscues turned the game. Tarik Skubal attempted an emergency flip on a bunt that sailed over Spencer Torkelson's head, then hit David Fry in the face with a 99 mph fastball, forcing Fry to be carted off. Skubal followed with a wild pitch and a balk that produced runs, and the Tigers lost 5-2. The Guardians executed consecutive bunts, rallied to tie the standings, and hold the tiebreaker. Detroit has lost seven straight games amid mounting frustration and uncharacteristic errors.
"We did a lot of uncharacteristic things, and it's hurting us,"
"There's some frustration," Skubal said. "Losing isn't fun, and we've been losing a lot."
"He chose to do the emergency flip [through his legs], which is not easy to do and didn't produce a good play. That is an example of an uncharacteristic mistake piling up on us at the worst time."
