Braden Montgomery is producing a breakout first full professional season after being acquired from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade. He was named the White Sox' Minor League Player of the Month for August following a strong run at Double-A Birmingham. Entering Wednesday he was batting .304/.386/.465 with a .850 OPS and has shown power potential while remaining younger than most at that level. He climbed MLB.com's rankings from No. 55 to No. 32 midseason. Montgomery projects as a corner outfielder with a plus arm and emphasizes daily adjustments and learning from failure.
"I enjoy a challenge, [and] the first year of pro ball has certainly been a challenge," Montgomery said Wednesday. "It's a game of failure, so you've got to fail a different way and use those failures to round out your bulletproof approach. Each level comes with its new set of challenges." Montgomery, whom the Sox acquired this past offseason from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade, was named the Sox' Minor League Player of the Month for August across 30 games.
"I made it happen pitch by pitch," Montgomery said. "Everything was coming together. Every day, I tried to take a step forward and I was locked in and seeing the pitches I needed to see. Getting up there and not missing them. I feel like sometimes when days aren't going as hot, you are missing the fastball or the ball in the middle of the plate you need to hit. "I feel like in that stretch, the pitch I needed to put a good swing on, I was able to make that happen."
