Michael Carrick has become the favourite to be appointed Manchester United's caretaker head coach, with club chiefs aiming to appoint before players return to training. Talks have progressed with the 44-year-old, who previously had a three-game spell as United's temporary boss in 2021, winning twice and drawing once. Ruben Amorim was sacked on 5 January after 14 months, and Darren Fletcher took temporary charge, overseeing an FA Cup defeat to Brighton and a draw at Burnley.
