Manchester United agree 37m deal for Ederson as midfeld rebuild starts
Manchester United have agreed to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson for a fee that could rise to about £37m. The move is expected to be the first summer arrival as United prepare for a return to the Champions League and aim to provide Michael Carrick with squad depth for four competitions. United’s director of football Jason Wilcox has monitored Ederson’s progress in Serie A and is a strong admirer. United want midfield quality after losing Casemiro, and Ederson, aged 26, fits that profile. Manuel Ugarte may be allowed to leave on loan or permanently. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, and Ederson has not been selected for the World Cup. He spent four seasons at Atalanta, played in the Champions League in the last two seasons, and won the Europa League in 2024. United are also considering other midfield options, including Elliot Anderson and Aurelien Tchouameni.
"He has spent four seasons at Atalanta, playing in the Champions League in the last two and winning the Europa League in 2024. Ederson is unlikely to be United's only midfield signing. Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson is another option but is thought to favour a move to Manchester City, and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni is also under consideration."
