Stephen Torpey has been confirmed as Manchester United's academy director, charged with continuing the club's tradition of producing elite young players. Manchester United has included at least one academy graduate in every matchday squad since October 1937. Historic graduates include Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton and David Beckham. Torpey replaces Nick Cox and joins after roles at Manchester City and Brentford. He is credited with contributing to the development of Cole Palmer, Rico Lewis and James McAtee. Manchester United described Torpey’s youth-development record as outstanding and committed to fostering an environment that nurtures players individually while preparing top talent for the first team.
After an extensive recruitment process, we are delighted to have appointed Stephen at such an exciting time for our academy. Stephen's record of youth development is outstanding; throughout his career he has played a significant role in the development of some of the most talented players in the country. We will work closely together to ensure that the academy continues to foster the right environment to nurture our young players individually while developing the best talent ready to excel in our first team.
I am really proud to have this opportunity to lead Manchester United's academy. It is obviously a great time to be joining as the club enters an exciting new era; I can't wait to play my role in continuing the incredible tradition of youth development here.
Despite their status as one of the biggest clubs in the world, United have always looked to nurture talent and hold the proud record of having at least one academy player in every matchday squad since October 1937. Over that time, the likes of Duncan Edwards, Bobby Charlton and David Beckham have emerged from the youth ranks.
