Keane moved to United from Nottingham Forest in 1993 for a British record £3.75 million and earned large signing-on fees and high wages, later becoming United captain. Contracts displayed by Neville revealed Keane had a £2.75m-per-year deal for 2000–2003 plus a £1m signing-on fee, rising to around £3.75m total and later renewing at £3.5m for 2003–2005 before wage adjustments. Keane received multiple £1m signing-on payments across years. Neville disclosed his final United salary was £2.3m in 2011 and said Keane’s earnings were roughly double his own. Keane brought old jerseys into the studio and became emotional.
"There is a contract for £2.75m-a-year in 2000 to 2003," said Neville. "Signing on fee for £1m. Wow. So you got £3.75m-a-year."
"That's double what I was earning in my last contract," said Neville, as he compared his contract to Keane's. "He left six years before me, I finished on £2.3m in 2011. "I didn't negotiate my contracts, I just signed them, I was not bothered. Whatever they offered me. "Whatever they offered me, I just said 'That's fine, I'm not bothered'. I did question it because someone told me they had been offered £250,00 and I said I should be on the same as then."
