In February, the White House began controlling its press pool, inviting 32 varied media outlets to gain closer access to President Trump. Most of these outlets lean conservative, including legacy media, religious networks, and innovative platforms. The decision marked a departure from the traditional control held by the White House Correspondents' Association, aiming to represent modern media habits. White House officials cited several factors in their selection process, emphasizing the need for media diversity and accessibility in presidential reporting.
It's beyond time that the White House press operation reflects the media habits of the American people in 2025, not 1925. A select group of D.C.-based journalists should no longer have a monopoly over the privilege of press access at the White House.
The office considers a variety of factors when filling the new media slot, including availability, interest, reach, space, the relevant news of the day, and other factors such as whether the outlet was excluded from previous press pools.
