Phillies rocked as star pitcher Zack Wheeler faces six to eight months out
Briefly

Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with venous thoracic outlet syndrome and will require additional surgery expected to sideline him for six to eight months. Wheeler previously had surgery on 18 August to remove a blood clot from his upper right arm and underwent a follow-up evaluation. After a second opinion, physicians recommended thoracic outlet decompression surgery in the coming weeks. That surgery could threaten his ability to start the 2026 season on time. Wheeler, 35, posted a 10-5 record with a 2.71 ERA in 24 starts and led the National League with 195 strikeouts; he finished second in Cy Young voting in 2021 and 2024.
