Singing helped Chingford man recover from stroke
Briefly

Peter Scott, a 75-year-old stroke survivor from Chingford, highlights the therapeutic benefits of singing in his recovery from aphasia after his stroke in July 2022. Despite initial fears of losing his ability to sing, a visit from a friend sparked his return to vocal music. After overcoming apprehension, Peter found solace and healing in singing, stating it helped him regain a sense of self. Now back with his church choir, he passionately believes in music’s power to heal emotional and physical scars from a stroke.
Singing was such a big part of my life, and I remember feeling so worried I'd never be able to sing again. It would have shattered me if I couldn't sing again - the thought is unbearable.
I hadn’t attempted to sing whilst recovering from the stroke; I think I was too frightened if I couldn't. Tears rolled down my cheek as we held hands and sang, and something in my body and bones just shifted.
For me, singing and music has some kind of healing power and I believe singing helped my recovery immensely. A stroke can leave someone feeling very alone and down.
