"Last night in my workshop on Interactive Journaling with AI, one participant spoke up after I had finished my demo with ChatGPT. "I feel less special. I thought the way it talked to me was unique, but it said similar things to you." Once I set aside the part of me that wanted to immediately reassure her, the significance hit me. This is exactly why I teach this workshop."
"The World Health Organization (n.d.) reports that 85 percent of people struggling with mental health challenges don't get the treatment they need. It's one of the biggest reasons so many people have turned to AI for mental health support. A YouGov poll (conducted for The Economist, 2025) found that 25 percent of respondents had already used or were considering using AI for mental health support."
Millions of people already use AI for emotional support because AI is available, responsive, and nonjudgmental. An estimated 25 percent of people have used or considered AI for mental health, and many millions turn to AI for companionship, self-reflection, or to discuss suicidal ideation. Many individuals seek AI because formal mental health care is inaccessible; approximately 85 percent of people with mental health challenges do not receive needed treatment. Some users feel diminished when AI replicates responses, prompting greater awareness of AI's influence. Therapists should not ignore AI use but should ask simple, nonjudgmental questions and help clients use AI safely, realistically, and with grounding.
