What to know about 'Alligator Alcatraz,' Florida migrant detention center in progress
Briefly

Florida officials are converting the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport into a migrant detention center, dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" due to its surroundings in the Everglades. This initiative supports efforts to tighten immigration policy under Governor Ron DeSantis and is seen as a cost-effective solution as the site requires minimal perimeter investment. With the federal government’s approval, the detention facility is set to begin operations in July with a capacity for 5,000 beds. This site, previously aimed to be the 'Everglades Jetport', is now seen as favorable for temporary detention purposes due to its isolated location.
This 30-square mile area is completely surrounded by the Everglades. It presents an efficient, low-cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility.
I think this is the best one, as I call it: Alligator Alcatraz, referencing the infamous prison island in San Francisco Bay.
Uthmeier described the site as 'virtually abandoned.' He got the green light within days for the approval of his plan.
Alligator Alcatraz will expand facilities and bed space in just days, thanks to our partnership with Florida.
