'Time to start anew.' Miami church leads Easter baptism on Virginia Key beach
Briefly

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, the Jesus Christ True Church celebrated a significant milestone by baptizing over 40 individuals at Hobie Beach in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1986, this Liberty City church continues its mission of community upliftment, embracing everyone regardless of their background. As congregants dressed in white prepared for their baptisms, they sang hymns, exemplifying their commitment to faith and unity. Despite the chilly ocean water, participants described the experience as rejuvenating and a powerful reaffirmation of their beliefs, and several attendees were locals who discovered the event online.
"That's the song we used to sing back in the day," said Bettye Hardy, a Miami native and longtime member of Jesus Christ True Church.
For the religious, Easter Sunday is a time to celebrate rebirth, salvation and second chances.
Though the water was a bit chilly in the early morning, Hardy said the experience was "rejuvenating," a way for community members to show unity and love.
