"Here we want to build on that by exploring how we might make photography-including phone-based photography-part of a mindful practice of noticing with awareness, beginner's mind, and a compassionately caring eye. Here are three prompts that will help you get started. Each of the following practices, when engaged with heartfully, can reveal the way everything in our world truly "can't help but shine with its own light" (as the Zen saying goes)."
"To bring this into your photography practice, head outside with the intention to really see with fresh eyes. Take a walk, listen to birds, feel the breeze on your skin, and look around, paying special attention to what's closest to you. Find three elements that you can see in a new way, noticing something brand new about something you thought you were already familiar with, or something that you walk by all the time without truly seeing."
Mindful photography trains attention through practices such as beginner's mind, seeking the unexpected, and looking beyond boundaries. Practitioner's intention is to see familiar subjects as if for the first time, noticing fresh details through close-ups, unusual angles, and intimate perspectives. Regular practice fosters noticing with awareness, curiosity, and compassionate regard for the world surrounding the practitioner. Using phone-based photography makes the practice accessible and portable. Engaging heartfully in these prompts can reveal overlooked beauty and open up new possibilities in daily life by shifting habitual stories and expectations that limit perception.
