Massachusetts will exempt eligible personal use items worth less than $2,500 from sales tax on August 9 and 10. This initiative, started by former Governor Baker in 2018, aims to support local businesses during a slow economic month and provide relief to consumers. In 2024, the tax holiday generated $3.45 million in indirect tax revenues due to increased activity. Non-eligible items include meals, vehicles, tobacco products, and any item over $2,500, among others. Shoppers can buy unlimited items below the $2,500 threshold for the exemption to apply.
"Lowering costs for Massachusetts residents and supporting local businesses is critical for our communities in this time of economic uncertainty," Sen. President Karen Spilka said in a statement.
"This year's temporary suspension of sales tax will bring consumers needed economic relief while boosting revenue for small businesses and retailers," House Speaker Ronald Mariano added.
