"'Friends of mine gave money. Not any robbers or gangsters or crooks.'"
Bertie Ahern ended his bid for the presidency and abandoned plans to run as an Independent. He had pursued the Fianna Fáil nomination and had been serious about securing it. He identified as a 'Fianna Fáiler' and ruled out standing outside the party. He attacked the Mahon Tribunal findings, insisting that friends gave money and denying any involvement with robbers, gangsters or crooks. He said a new generation had been told lies about his character and political life. He accused his successor Micheál Martin of being 'anti' him, which contributed to his decision not to proceed.
