By Trying to Enter the Ecuadorian Consulate, ICE Has Reached a New Level of Entitlement
"Under the Vienna Conventions, to which the United States is a party, foreign consular buildings are off-limits to law enforcement from the host country without authorization from consular officials. Video footage verified by The New York Times shows a member of staff rushing to an entrance to the consulate, where an agent appears to have opened the door. The employee can be heard saying, "This is the Ecuadorean consulate, you're not allowed to enter.""
"Elsewhere on the diplomatic front, the State Department continues to spread joy and good will across the globe. From AFP: Danish veterans on Wednesday criticized the U.S. embassy in Copenhagen for removing national flags put up in front of the mission to honor Danish soldiers killed in Afghanistan. The embassy later backtracked, telling Danish media it would not have taken the flags down if it had been aware of the intention behind them."
Consulate employees stopped a U.S. agent from entering the Ecuadorian consulate in Northeast Minneapolis, citing diplomatic protections under the Vienna Conventions that bar host-country law enforcement without consular authorization. Video footage shows a staff member rushing to the entrance and saying, "This is the Ecuadorean consulate, you're not allowed to enter," while an agent replies, "If you touch me, I'll grab you." The Ecuadorean foreign ministry lodged a complaint with the American Embassy in Ecuador requesting that such acts not recur. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment. Separately, the U.S. embassy in Copenhagen removed flags honoring Danish soldiers and later backtracked after criticism.
