"Airbus instructed its clients Friday to take "immediate precautionary action" after evaluating a technical malfunction on board a JetBlue flight in October. "Intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls," it said, adding that "a significant number of A320 Family aircraft currently in-service" may be affected. Replacing the software will take "a few hours" on most planes but for some 1,000 aircraft, the process "will take weeks", a source close to the issue told AFP."
"BBC reporting suggests that up to 50 flights to and from Charles de Gaulle Airport, its Paris base, have been cancelled on Saturday morning. As of 08:30am, online departure information for the Paris airport shows several cancellations on Air France services, mostly on domestic flights, though some of the flagship carrier's scheduled departures are going ahead. Airlines worldwide reported delays and cancellations after Airbus warned that up to 6,000 A320-family aircraft may need a software upgrade. Airbus ordered immediate precautionary action following analysis of a JetBlue October flight malfunction, citing intense solar radiation that can corrupt flight-control data. Most affected aircraft can have the software replaced in a few hours, while around 1,000 planes may require weeks. Several carriers, including Air France, Avianca and easyJet, reported cancellations, fleet impacts, or completed updates. Airport departure displays showed multiple cancellations and customers are being notified individually by SMS and email. EASA issued a statement.
