"Any rail enthusiast remembers the novelty of stepping aboard their first double-decker train. Seeing the towering mode of transport edge into a station in a country such as France, Italy or Austria - to name a few - is quite something, commuters and sustainable travellers jostling for seats on a labyrinthine convoy of carriages. While such novelties are still found only across the Channel - and much further afield, of course - that's all about to change."
"The 200-metre trains will be interoperable across all five countries served today, plus new destinations of Geneva and Frankfurt. Best of all, they're Eurostar's most sustainable trains to date, made from 97 per cent recyclable components and 25 per cent recycled materials. An initial order of 30 trains has been placed, with an option for an additional 20 as part of Eurostar's journey to transport 30 million annual passengers."
"Placing this milestone order marks the concrete realisation of Eurostar's ambitious growth strategy - to reach 30 million passengers by investing in a brand-new fleet. We're particularly proud to bring double-decker trains to the UK for the very first time. Customers can expect a very special new train with Eurostar Celestia, which will offer exceptional comfort, a unique Eurostar experience and new surprises to be revealed. This is a golden age for international sustainable travel - and Eurostar is leading the race."
Eurostar will introduce a new fleet of double-decker trains named Eurostar Celestia, built by Alstom as part of a €2 billion investment and scheduled to enter service in 2031. The 200-metre trains will operate across the five countries currently served and extend to Geneva and Frankfurt. The trains use 97 percent recyclable components and 25 percent recycled materials. An initial order of 30 units includes an option for 20 more to support a target of transporting 30 million passengers annually. The fleet marks the introduction of double-decker trains to the UK and aims to enhance comfort and sustainability on international routes.
