The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled over 5 million above-ground kiddie pools, 48 inches tall or higher, sold by Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup since 2002. The pools use compression straps that can create footholds for small children to climb in without a ladder, posing drowning risks. While most newer models have resolved this issue, the recall aims to ensure safety across all affected models. Historical data shows at least nine children drowned between 2007 and 2022 in incidents related to these pools, highlighting the urgency of addressing these safety concerns.
Back in the '80s and early '90s, kiddie pools were basically puddle-sized and it didn't take much to crack the side or deflate it entirely.
Sometime in the early-'00s, however, 'kiddie pool technology' really took off, resulting in higher quality and larger pools at accessible prices.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for over 5 million pools sold nationwide due to safety concerns with compression straps.
Between 2007 and 2022, at least nine children in several states drowned due to access issues related to the recalled pools with compression straps.
