Five things the election result tells us about Norway in 2025
"With almost all votes counted on Tuesday, the five "red-green" parties -- Stre's Labour, the Centre Party, the Greens, the Socialist Left and the Red party -- have 87 seats compared to 82 seats to the opposing right-leaning parties. The three smaller parties in the red-green group, the Greens, the Socialist Left (SV) and the Red party, all gained the crucial 4 percent share of the vote guaranteeing them MPs in parliament."
"Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stre is generally expected to form a minority government, but finding a consensus for things like passing a budget and other laws is likely to be more challenging than during his first term. After the 2021 election, Stre was able to command a majority in parliament with the backing of the Centre Party and SV only."
Jonas Gahr Stre is set to continue as prime minister after the left-leaning red-green bloc secured a narrow parliamentary majority. The red-green group holds 87 seats versus 82 for the right-leaning parties. The populist Progress Party surged to 24 percent, a 12-point rise, becoming the largest opposition party. The Conservatives fell to 14 percent. The Greens, Socialist Left (SV) and Red party each passed the 4 percent threshold, securing proportional seats. The centrist Liberal (Venstre) fell to 3.6 percent and lost proportional representation but retains three district MPs. Stre is expected to lead a minority government and will face tougher consensus-building to pass budgets and laws.
