Germany is nearing an agreement with the Taliban government in Afghanistan to organise regular deportation flights of convicted Afghan migrants. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said talks are at a very advanced stage and that deportations would include both charter and commercial flights. Germany has carried out two deportation charters since 2021, returning 81 people in July and 28 last year, with Qatar mediating. German ministry staff held technical discussions in Kabul to arrange flights. Dobrindt said he would do everything to make it work and indicated a desire to pursue similar talks with Syria. Chancellor Friedrich Merz is pursuing tougher immigration measures amid a rise in far-right support.
