Comreg will delay activation of a blocking mechanism intended to stop scam SMS messages. The anti-scam text initiative applies to SMS messages that use company or institution names. The initiative launched in July and has been beset by technical and operational problems since then. The anti-fraud system that underpins the blocking mechanism is not yet fully functional. Comreg fears that premature blocking could prevent legitimate messages from hospitals and other sensitive service providers. The regulator has therefore chosen to defer blocking until the system reliably distinguishes between fraudulent and legitimate texts.
