"The Christmas period is one of the busiest on Irish roads. It is also one of the periods during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision. Gardaí are appealing to all those who will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention."
Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority launched a National Slowdown initiative running until midnight to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions nationwide. Enforcement by gardaí alongside GoSafe mobile and static cameras detected nearly 392 vehicles exceeding applicable speed limits so far today. Recorded excess speeds included 139km/h in a 60km/h zone, 119km/h in a 50km/h zone, 163km/h in a 120km/h zone, and other serious violations in Dublin and across counties. Authorities appeal to drivers to slow down, take extra care and give driving full attention during the busy Christmas period. Road deaths this year have reached 186, a 12% increase on 2024, with campaigners warning the toll may reach 200 by year end.
