Netherlands set to get first-ever gay PM after far-right party suffers big losses
"Today we determine the course of our country. Either we keep hanging in grudge and stagnation, or together turn the page on Wilders. I believe in a Netherlands that wants to move forward. That big dares to dream, hold each other together, and chooses hope, cooperation and solutions. Go vote because together we'll show: it's possible."
"without a doubt one of the most talented politicians the Netherlands has ever had,"
"I'm sure that if we win as the exit polls say we do, he'll want to unite the country and turn around the negative spiral that Wilders has pushed the country in."
Rob Jetten, 38, is poised to become the Netherlands' youngest and first openly gay prime minister after Democrats 66 (D66) gained 17 seats while Geert Wilders' far-right party lost 11. Jetten emphasized positive change and a "yes, we can" message supported by a surge in advertising that allowed the party to focus on divisive issues such as immigration and the housing crisis. He challenged Wilders for only standing up for LGBTQ+ rights to villainise Muslims. D66 colleague Kajsa Ollongren praised his talent and said he would seek to unite the country. Jetten is engaged to international hockey player Nicolas Keenan.
